Brainstorming Light & Materials in Science Village

On a sunny September day, three research groups led by BULs Dmitry Baranov, Maning Liu, and Matias Kagias gathered for a workshop at The Loop. They spent the day brainstorming ideas about the future collaborative research around the topic of Light- and Matter-Architected Function.

The workshop began with an inspiring talk from Professor Emma Sparr, coordinator of the COMMONS, the VR Center of Excellence at Lund University. Professor Sparr shared valuable insights into structures and strategies for organizing collaborative research and the environment. The presentation set the tone for the day and provided momentum to the subsequent discussions.

Working in small groups, participants explored topics related to scientific vision, organization, sustainability, and the broader academic and societal impact around the concept of a Light- and Matter-Architected Function. These discussions continued through lunch and afternoon fika, creating a dynamic exchange where young researchers learned more about each other’s work and identified new points of connection.

By the end of the day, it was inspiring to see participants exchanging contacts and thinking of future collaborations. The workshop not only sparked fresh ideas but also planted seeds for future interactions, an exciting step toward building something bigger together. Around 18 participants, mainly PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, attended the event, which was supported by the Light and Materials profile area at Lund University.
